Radio Detox

THIS PODCAST PAYS ARTISTS

Podcasts that pay artists for their songs aren't only possible, they're here. Let's support independent artists. These professionally aspiring musicians deserve better than Spotify, radio, and record labels.

Radio Detox by Heather Larson

The mission of Radio Detox is to break free from the limits of mainstream music platforms like Apple and Spotify. As the host of Radio Detox, I want to break free. I want to break free from being a bad fan who doesn't patronize music in a way that benefits the artists whose music I love so much. As a podcaster, I want to break free from the trappings of Spotify and Apple, which have earned me so little money it's shameful. Thank goodness for platforms like Fountain, Wavlake, and TrueFans, which are changing the game for both independent musicians and podcasters.

Radio Detox tells the story of an emerging alternative to traditional music industry models, focusing on direct artist-fan relationships and fairer compensation through new technology that enables direct value exchange between creators and audiences.

I'm on a mission to spotlight independent artists who are thriving in the "value verse," where listeners can support creators directly through platforms like Wavlake, Fountain, and other Podcasting 2.0 apps. There's also a world of "V4V" for podcasters and other independent content creators.

What kind of money can you earn from staying off the "traditional" or "legacy" podcasting platforms like Apple or Spotify and using podcasting 2.0 solutions like Fountain instead? Here's an example of what my podcasts are earning on Fountain!

Earning information current as of September 21, 2025. Total: 99,795 sats or $115.31. Earnings split amongst guests and partners of Radio Detox. Still more than I earned with Spotify, Apple, etc., and I don't have to run any ads.

I'm building on Open Source Tech:

🎙️
Podcasting 2.0: Podcasting that allows podcasters & independent artists to earn via peer-to-peer payments rather than run annoying ads or be beholden to sponsorships. Can you still do ads & sponsors? Yes! But you don't have to!
💜
Nostr: The open source protocol replaces legacy, closed places online. Nostr replaces legacy social media platforms, but it's also so much more. It allows you to own and control your identity, social graph, and your work. On Nostr, we're building for music, podcasts, AI, health, fitness, and more. Nostr lets you build without bounds.
💡
Bitcoin: Sound money is for everyone. It solves a multitude of problems that keep marginalized people out of the financial system. While Bitcoin may come with many stigmas, most of those are incorrect. Bitcoin isn't for politicians, traders, certain countries, "the rich," or whatever your misconception may be. It's for the unbanked, women, the oppressed, activists, dissidents, journalists, and everyone regardless of age, country, beliefs, etc. Bitcoin helps us create an ecosystem where independent musicians and other "creators" can put their work out into the world, have it discovered, and earn money from it directly from their audience. I don't do "cryptocurrency," just Bitcoin. I don't do "blockchain," just Bitcoin.

Learn how this technology helps both musicians and podcasters to take control of their earnings and creative freedom of expression—and freedom of speech. Tune in for stories from independent artists like Ainsley Costello, Abel James, Sara Jade, and Man Like Kweks—plus interviews with innovators pushing the boundaries of podcasting technology, Nostr, Bitcoin, and more.

If you're ready to discover new music, support independent voices, and detox from the mainstream, you're in the right place.

My newest project: Soapbox Sessions

This is my latest project with Nostr evangelist Derek Ross, called Soapbox Sessions. Derek and I work for Soapbox Technology, where we build open source tech on Nostr. We're an AI-first company building multiple projects. Derek is our DevRel, and he's also famous for being the "official" Nostr evangelist, or as I call him jokingly, "The Nostr CEO." I'm the Marketing Director of Soapbox, where I look forward to the day we're solving most of the problems of the Internet by rebuilding it on Nostr. Listen to Soapbox Sessions wherever you get your podcasts, or preferably, on the app we built, Podstr, or a Podcasting 2.0 app like Fountain. We'll bring you the latest Nostr news every Thursday!

Derek & I talk about how tech is helping independent music on the Soapbox Sessions.
