What is ‘life coaching’ anyway?

It’s an art, a science, spirituality, and self-awareness tools all rolled into one — and then some. I’m Certified Transformational Life Coach Heather Larson and it’s time I start answering the ten most common questions I get asked about what I do as a coach. I’m sure there are still many more questions, but here are some life coaching basics. Please do ask your questions in the comments!

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is a relationship between a client and coach in which the coach facilitates the client’s chosen path to personal change by guiding powerful conversations and asking questions with deep purpose.

The term “life coaching” is a little broad, but can include success coaching, career coaching, creativity coaching, and even relationship coaching. A coach can offer industry specific services — like radio morning team coaching (a service I offer upon request since I worked for 22 years in broadcasting). I can coach writers, journalists, radio on-air personalities, and morning show teams. I’ve also held the job of sober coach in the past!

But today, I concentrate on coaching intelligent women who are high achievers — but who know they always have more room to grow, change, and enhance their personal wellness through coaching, Reiki, yoga, and meditation.

Life coaching is neither counseling or therapy but can cover the gamut of personal development and performance. From habit change to mindset, goal setting to leadership — a life coach acts as a guide who helps in facilitating positive changes in clients’ lives.

Life coaching centers on where you are, where you’re going, and how you want to get there. There’s no looking at your past from a psychological perspective as a therapist, psychiatrist, or counselor would do.

2. What does life coaching do that nothing else does?

Since life coaching isn’t psychiatry, and we aren’t delving into the issues of your past, coaching is a way to help you move forward. As a life coach, I offer accountability, motivation, and I help you access your greatness. In my coaching, I offer skills and strategies to help you reach your goals.

As a coach, my goal is to empower you to get in touch with your inner knowing. I want to help you make better decisions faster while staying true to who you really are. I want to help you with organization and productivity. Helping others handle anxiety and stress is one of my missions.

My coaching is holistic. You’re a whole person with a big life — I adjust my coaching accordingly to suit every facet of your life. Coaching covers the spiritual, scientific, practical, emotional, and mental aspects of life.

Coaching isn’t about fixing a psychological problem. It’s about expanding your life so you can step into your greatness. Coaching is about a positive, nurturing experience through productive conversations. I take you past your comfort zone (comfortably, of course) and into actionable steps toward the life you want.

3. What are the benefits of life coaching?

Coaching is like nothing else. Every coach is unique. I bring academic knowledge with my tried and true experience as a para-social worker. I also bring personal experience to the table as a career changer, perpetual creative soul, and dabbler in all things spiritual and metaphysical.

4. What made you want to be a certified transformational life coach?

I absolutely loved coaching others as a sober coach, also known as a Kansas Certified Peer Mentor (KCPM). I felt like I was really making a difference, leading by example, and getting to see people begin new lives in sobriety. I was helping people achieve something they previously thought was unattainable — sobriety. I became passionate about the processes behind helping people to make positive changes and create new habits.

I enrolled at the Southwest Institute of the Healing Arts (online), where I’d previously been coached and received polarity sessions. Besides my work in the addiction field, I’d been giving Reiki sessions and teaching Reiki classes for years.

During Reiki sessions, my clients were asking me questions about their lives, processing emotions, and sharing really personal stories while seeking guidance. It was a natural progression to want to learn how to coach others around topics that were coming up during Reiki sessions. Clients wanted to talk about everything from job changes to enhancing their creativity and even work-life balance. I felt like I needed more training to tackle some of those things, so I became a Certified Transformational Life Coach in 2017!

I knew coaching would help me serve my Reiki clients even better. I knew some Reiki clients and students would be interested in transformational life coaching as a companion to Reiki sessions. Ultimately, I knew pairing the two arts together would be able to offer more help to more people. So I became a “Reiki Life Coach.”

Now, I’m adding yoga and meditation to the arsenal of spiritual personal development I use as I work to complete even more certifications.

5. How do I onboard my clients? What’s the process like?

First, you book a free consultation so we can have an initial meeting over Zoom. Allow 30 minutes for this first time session. It allows me to find out what you’re looking for in a coach and allows you a chance to meet me to find out how I work.

If it’s a fit, I’ll send you a coaching agreement, and you can decide what type of session you want to book. If you want to just try a single session, you can book that — or you can purchase a package of sessions. I don’t determine how many sessions you need — you decide.

You pay for sessions and/or packages of sessions through the store at my website. All payments are handled through the site securely through Stripe, PayPal, or Venmo. I can also accept payment by Bitcoin (BTC). At in-person events like fairs or yoga festivals, I can accept payment by card through Square point-of-sale hardware (card readers). I do not accept cash or checks.

I offer upfront pricing; I keep my prices current in the store. I’m not one of those coaches who hides their fee structure or changes prices based on a whim. I rarely offer sales or discounts; discounts are offered on packages.

6. How often do I need coaching in order for it to work?

Again, you determine how often you want to work with me as your life coach. This is where the empowerment begins. I suggest starting with the free 30-minute coaching consultation. If you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I’m the coach for you, go ahead and purchase a package. If you still aren’t sure how many sessions you want or simply want to complete one full session before committing to a package, go ahead and purchase a single session.

Yes, you’ll receive results from more and regular sessions. But this is up to you and will look different for everyone. For some people, this will mean a session a week for six months. For others, you’re going to be doing great to book two sessions a month because you’re a working woman who’s raising kids!

Either way — the choice always remains yours. THIS is empowerment!

I just don’t dictate to my clients what their schedule with me needs to be. You won’t stay with coaching if it becomes too expensive or time consuming. Commitment is key, so I want you to purchase only what you can commit to.

Being coached takes work! I often assign “homework” and other tasks in order to take coaching outside the Zoom call and into your daily life. My life coaching with you therefore doesn’t end when we hang up the call. I also remain available (within reason) by email between sessions. We often create accountability steps to work with outside of sessions as well. If you want coaching to work, it takes effort outside of “a one-hour session a week.”

7. How many different ways can I be coached?

Coaching is infinite! There are so many different ways you can receive life coaching. I offer writing and creativity coaching, steps toward habit and mindset change, and a whole life overhaul. I offer minimalism, de-cluttering, and organizational coaching. I can coach you on changing careers, interviewing for jobs, and even creating resumes.

I don’t coach sports — I’m a life coach. I coach on anything and everything pertaining to living a better, happier, more fulfilling, and holistic lifestyle.

The only things I don’t do?

• I don’t coach on dating and relationships.
• I also prefer not to sober coach anymore.

I don’t feel that coaching is a replacement for addiction treatment, which is a serious matter. If you need mental health or addiction help, I will refer you out to someone qualified to handle that. I would love to see more addicts choose harm reduction and The Freedom Model, as well as medically-assisted treatment. But I am not the person qualified to guide anyone on that — just know those things are out there. They exist. They are changing lives. They are saving lives.

8. How to reprogram your subconscious mind with life coaching & Reiki

“Can you teach me to reprogram my subconscious mind?”

I get asked this a lot! Everyone wants to reprogram their subconscious. But it takes work. You’ve got layers of conditioning buried in there. I doesn’t happen in one 20-minute hypnotherapy or guided meditation. So please don’t expect that of me. Digging up one’s subconscious can take time, but there are simple ways to do it — both with and without Usui Reiki.

First — and this is the self-awareness part — you have to root out and identify what your subconscious programming even is. I can often tell where to start by listening to the words you use and watching your body language. As a life coach, I am always listening for the unsaid like that. This is a skill set I have honed for years.

9. What is a Reiki Life Coach?

I’m your Reiki Life Coach, or a life coach who tends to call upon Reiki energy during her life coaching sessions — with your permission, of course. If you are open to receiving Usui Reiki energy during your life coaching sessions, please let me know.

Reiki can help during life coaching sessions when your goal is to create less stress and anxiety in your life. Reiki causes no harm and always brings a calming, relaxing energy to the situation. It’s a form of meditation, self-care, and relaxation all in one. Reiki helps you to get in tune with your body’s energy field. I’m talking about your energy body and chakras. Some call it the “aura.” There are often issues we work on in our lives that have corresponding chakras. Chakras are the body’s energy centers.

If you’re open to Reiki, we can begin to do chakra work, call on healing crystals, create mantras, and use other ways or working with the energetic body.

10. Do you offer a life coaching certification?

No. I earned my life coaching certification online at the Southwest Institute of the Healing Arts (SWIHA) in Tempe, Arizona. I’d lived in Phoenix before and felt at home after visiting SIWHA several times for coaching, cranio-sacral, and polarity sessions. SWIHA is an actual college accredited by the Arizona Board of Regents. At the time I enrolled, my 100-hour certification cost me less than $2,000.

There are many online life coaches who offer their own version of a certification for twice that price — or for a lot more. There’s no regulatory body certifying life coaches and what we may offer in sessions or as academic instruction to students of life coaching. There are a few professional associations offering their own independent certifications.

I also became a “peer mentor” (KCPM) or sober coach/recovery specialist in the addiction field, gaining real-world experience in a variety of settings. I took the 16-hour certification twice over the years, giving me 32 hours state-sanctioned training total (not counting CEUs or CMEs).

It would be impossible for me to offer that type of experience to life coaching students. The experience I gained in 4.5 years of para-social work was crucial to my passion for coaching and my development as a coach. I estimate I worked with clients in the addiction field for at least 7,600 hours in a variety of settings. (This isn’t counting years of offering Usui Reiki sessions and classes).

I worked with both men and women; my clients were all ages; my clients were all abilities; and my clients were often involved in various stages of the justice system. I worked in a jail, detox, and recovery center. There’s no way I could replicate such experiences to coaching students — nor would I want to do so.

I no longer coach those in crisis or in emergency situations. Nothing in a coaching setting is urgent or an emergency. If it is, that’s a sign a client needs to be referred out to services above my level of case.

This is also why I have NEVER booked Reiki sessions for clients who claim they “need urgent help.”

If you’re interested in becoming a life coach, I recommend reputable, respected, and accredited learning institutions like SWIHA. I’d hate to give someone on the Internet $5,000 for an oddly-named certification no one has ever heard of (and believe me, their are plenty of those out there). Always do your own research and stick with places that have been around for years — with good results.

No one can offer job placement for life coaching, so be wary of that snake oil. The most a reputable school will offer is some training on how to create a practice of your own. There’s no one way to succeed as a coach as no two coaches are alike. What you see here on the site is years of work behind the scenes that happened on nights & weekends as I worked other jobs. There is no overnight success. Stay away from those who tell you money can be made quickly in high amounts or who offer weird tutoring on “manifestation.” Coaching is as risky as any other entrepreneurial venture!
